My Only New Year’s Resolution: Unsubscribe

I am tired of the clutter. Tired of the lies. Tired of the fear-mongering and subtle bullying. That’s why I am unsubscribing from every mailing list that comes into my mail.

I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions. They don’t work and simple logic would tell you that, if it’s such a great idea, start now!

But this year I am breaking my own decades-old tradition and making a NYR: Unsubscribe from mailing lists that do me no good — despite what they promise.

Look, I am only human. I am a solopreneur and always looking for ways to improve my income and my sites and services. So that means I read a lot of ‘Improve your SEO’, ‘Get more income streams’ types of emails.

Like this:

I signed up for them because at some point I believed that I could learn something.

Let me be totally clear here: these lists — and these gurus — have nothing to tell you.

They play on one simple fear: FOMO — the fear of missing out.

You’re afraid that there is a simple way to make more money, and you just aren’t aware of it. I mean, there must be a simple way, right? (spoiler: there isn’t). There must be a way that I can sign up for a cookie-cutter business, or series of email templates, or webinar, or a 5-part email blast that will tell me all I need to know. Right?

Wrong.

Inside you — and I — know the truth.

If it is simple, it isn’t going to make a lot of money. If anyone can do it after reading 5 emails or paying for a $499 course then you are entering a market that will require some real savvy to get noticed. In other words, you will need to be unique. You will need to not give the same service or product. You will need to innovate.

I have known this my whole life, but yet still I sign up for these lists and sites. It is human nature.

The Number One Way To Make Money Online

I will tell you the absolute best way to make money online. You know it because if you’re like me you have participated. The best way to make money online is to tell someone how to make money online!

It’s so obvious it is painful.

That is how these mailing lists and websites survive — by selling you utterly useless information because they know you want to make money online.

It doesn’t require much effort. Look at Fred Lam. He’s making so much money telling people how to make money online that he doesn’t even bother to update his emails:

Uh, Fred, it’s coming up to 2022, not 2020.

Unsubscribed!

Or Kevin and his use of the number 0 instead of ‘o’ and @ instead of ‘a’.

Unsubscribed!

Or Darren Hardy and his painful use of emojis!

🤬 this! Unsubscribed!

Or Mo at Flickstr (honestly, use vowels!) promising me a look in on a 400B industry! (note: there is no $ sign, so I don’t know what 400B means!)

Unsubscribed!

What To Do Instead of Subscribing

Look, I get it. It is scary to try and start your own business or make money online. You might feel you have no clue. But I am here to say ‘you got this’. And how do I know?

Because you are a human being. A human being with experiences and needs and wants. And (sorry to tell you this) you are not alone. Hundreds, thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands or millions of other people on this planet want to hear from you and how you are overcoming your struggles.

There is no other way to really be successful than to tap into who you are and what you have to offer. If you can do that, if you can solve your own problems, then people will beat a path to your door.

Thanks for reading. Please don’t subscribe.

But I do have a YouTube channel, or you can just message me here on Medium and we can talk about what it is you want to do.
